Preventive Dentistry for Early Diagnosis and Optimal Oral Health

Preventive dentistry is the foundational philosophy at KFA Dental. To that end, we urge patients to receive routine cleanings and exams twice a year for optimal oral health. Our Farmingdale, NY, office is equipped with advanced technology, including digital radiography and DIAGNOdent™ laser cavity detection, among others. With these systems, we can diagnose oral health problems more quickly and accurately. Then we can provide appropriate treatment to preserve and maintain the health of your smile. In addition to a cleaning and exam, Drs. Donald Kahn, Angela Ferrari, or Daniel Aldieri will perform an oral cancer screening at each routine appointment. Because oral cancer is more easily treatable in the early stages, this diagnostic test could end up saving your life.

Why Are Preventive Visits So Important?

We all know that brushing and flossing are essential for a healthy smile, and, like many people, you may assume that good daily hygiene is enough to ensure your oral health. Unfortunately, nothing you do at home can completely remove the bacteria that leads to cavities and gum disease. Only a dental professional can thoroughly eliminate microbes, along with plaque and tartar. Additionally, regular visits can help with timely diagnosis of oral health issues, allowing us to preserve your natural teeth, prevent serious discomfort, and help you avoid the need for extensive restorative care.

Your Dental Cleaning

During your cleaning, your hygienist will use a manual scaler to remove plaque and tartar from your gum line and between your teeth. Guided by a mirror and using careful techniques, she will perform a very gentle procedure. Then she will polish your teeth to remove any remaining plaque and to give your smile a healthy sparkle. Finally, she will thoroughly floss your teeth and, if necessary, instruct you on proper brushing and flossing techniques. We usually recommend that you have a cleaning twice a year; however, if you suffer from recurring cavities or if you have already been diagnosed with gum disease, we suggest more frequent appointments.

Regular visits can help with timely diagnosis of oral health issues, allowing us to preserve your natural teeth, prevent serious discomfort, and help you avoid the need for extensive restorative care.

Your Dental Exam

Your dental cleaning will almost always occur in conjunction with an exam. Your dentist will visually evaluate your teeth, looking for cracks, lesions, and other surface damage. He or she will also examine your gums and soft tissues. Inflammation, redness, lesions, and small sores may be signs of periodontitis or oral cancer. Both of these conditions require swift and effective care.

To ensure timely diagnoses of decay, your dentist will typically employ DIAGNOdent laser cavity detection. By measuring the levels of fluorescence in your teeth, he or she can often find cavities when they are still very small. Then your doctor can provide a small, conservative filling. Without a efficient diagnosis, decay would spread, and you might require a large crown, root canal therapy, or even an extraction. Dental x-rays can also help uncover decay as well as misalignment, impacted wisdom teeth, and other problems. With our emphasis on advanced technology, we proudly employ digital x-rays, which provide a clearer image than traditional x-rays. An added benefit is that your dentist can quickly compare your most recent x-rays to previous ones, allowing him or her to notice any new issues immediately.
